Top 5 Books that Feature Travel

"Top 5 Wednesday" is a weekly meme created by Lainey at GingerReadsLainey on Youtube and hosted by Goodreads hosts Lainey and Mindy. You can find the goodreads group here.
This list definitely has five different types of travel: intercontinental travel, travel between worlds, interstate travel, travel within a single state, and time travel. Let's go.

5. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini (Intercontinental Travel)

Okay, so the travel in this book doesn't really happen until halfway through, but THIS. BOOK. Ugh. It's just too good not to talk about. This is also a new favorite of mine because I had to read it for school this past semester.

Let me say: I'm so glad I read it.

I might not have read it otherwise just because it was one of those books that I've always said "Oh, I'll read that one day." If that is you, please go and pick this up. It's so good. I just, I can't.

4. The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis (Travel Between Worlds)

Now, this wouldn't be a T5W list if I didn't cheat at least a little bit, but I do have the bind-up so it's technically  one book. This is most definitely a cherished series for me. It most definitely set a standard for my reading life: not finishing series.

I never said that it was a good  standard.

Also, I definitely have written papers on this series.

And I had a slight (major) crush on Peter Pevensie as a middle schooler.

3. Paper Towns  by John Green (Interstate Travel)

There's a map on the cover. I feel like you can safely assume there is travel in this novel.

But in all reality, the road trip taken in this book (aka the entire second half of this novel) was my favorite part of this book. I love road trips in real life and in books, especially when they are humorous, and this one is most definitely humorous.

This is my favorite of the three John Green novels that I have read. Honestly, it's mainly because there's a road trip, and the main character is me in male form. We are one.

2. All The Bright Places  by Jennifer Niven (Travel Within a Single State)

This book. This book wrecked me. However, this following portion will not mention the sad part of this book, and instead will focus on the happy parts.

Often, when people talk about this book, they talk about how they cried because it broke their heart, put it back together, and then broke it again (which it did to me as well). However, a huge part of this book is Finch and Violet traveling around their home state of Indiana and finding all of the wonderful things in their state. There are so many cute moments within these parts, and it definitely made me want to wander around my home state and find all the bright places.

Tehehe.

1. Outlander  by Diana Gabaldon (Time Travel)

It's only my favorite book ever. It had to make the list, especially when it's about travel.

If by some miracle, you don't know what this novel is about, please, please sit down (I mean, you probably already are because I told you to do that earlier). This book follows Claire Randall who was a combat nurse during the Second World War in England. When the war ends, Claire and her husband Frank go on a "second honeymoon" to Scotland. By accident, Claire stumbles through the Craigh na Dun in 1945 to the Craigh na Dun in 1743.

Not only does this book have the time travel mentioned above, but there is a lot  more travel by horse. Seriously, there is so much travel by horseback, and in the travel scenes, pretty much all of the action/conflict scenes take place whilst traveling around the Scottish Highlands.

DNF Review: Day 21 by Kass Morgan

I read The 100  last month, and I when my TBR jar challenge was to read a series finale, I decided to finish this trilogy in April. See my review of the first book here.
I try not to DNF books so far in (I was about 54% via Goodreads), but I just couldn't do it. I really, really, really wanted to like this book, but I just COULDN'T make myself do it. I honestly don't think I'd ever been so annoyed with a book in my entire life. Not just with the characters, but with the story and the way that Morgan writes  it.

I feel like she was trying to avoid being info-dumpy at all costs, and in the process made a book with a backstory so confusing, I was begging for her to explain things to me. Nothing is explained. All of these insanely convenient things happen all the time, and Morgan just expects her readers to know what is happening in this world.

Clarke wasn't that terrible in the first book. She was just whiny about Wells and love-sick for Bellamy. I figured her character would develop in the second book. It didn't. All the characters just whined about their love interests (and past love interests) and that was pretty much the entire book. At least what I read of it. Clarke has the YA-heroine "I'm so different than all the other girls" characteristic, and it felt very trope-y and overused in this book. Clarke kept saying that she was so different and a hero and strong-willed, but then never did  anything about it. I need to see development and not just hear the character's thoughts about how they've changed so much.

What hurts me most about this series is that it could have been PHENOMENAL. I think the story needed a different writer. One that wouldn't be afraid to make this a little more Lord of the Flies  and a little less "The Bachelor" with space-teenagers. Oh, and with ONE perspective, not four.

Day 21 by Kass Morgan (The Hundred #2)
Published: 16 September 2014 by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Format - Pages: Hardback - 320 pages
Source: School Library
No one has set foot on Earth in centuries -- until now. It's been 21 days since the hundred landed on Earth. They're the only humans to set foot on the planet in centuries...or so they thought. Facing an unknown enemy, Wells attempts to keep the group together. Clarke strikes out for Mount Weather, in search of other Colonists, while Bellamy is determined to rescue his sister, no matter the cost. And back on the ship, Glass faces an unthinkable choice between the love of her life and life itself.
In this pulse-pounding sequel to Kass Morgan's The 100 , secrets are revealed, beliefs are challenged, and relationships are tested. And the hundred will struggle to survive the only way they can -- together.

Life Update

Okay, life update comes first because . . . I FINISHED MY THESIS.

IT IS FINISHED.

Nothing explains my excitement like excited Rachel and Phoebe GIFs. Nothing. I just have my presentation on Tuesday and then I am home free. That's a saying right? "Home free?" I think so. Also, I bought the glorious lotion in the picture above from Bath and Body Works along with one of the car refreshers on Monday. I needed it.

Books-A-Million

So after spending $25 at Staples on printing my thesis, I drove down the road to BAM! where I could spend more money on stuff that I actually wanted to spend my money on. So, of course, I went to the bargain section, looked through and didn't spot anything new and exciting, but I did see this one that I'd been eyeing for a while, but just never picked up. I couldn't resist.

Library

Immediately after seeing this trailer:

I put the book on hold from my library. It came in yesterday morning, so I picked it up. I could not be more excited for this tiny (it's actually tiny a.k.a. less than 300 pages) book.

Netgalley

Angel books. I've never read angel books before, and everyone seems to love these. When I saw these on Netgalley, I felt like I had to request them. I am definitely picking them up sometime soon.

#FridayReads - 17 April 2015

This is overly ambitious. So, so ambitious.

I need to finish the last 100 pages of The Book Thief  for my Modern Literature course. Additionally, I need to read the first six chapters of The Help  by Kathryn Stockett by Wednesday.

Hopefully, I will finish of Day 21 , which I have been slugging through due to an increased end-of-the-year work load. I would also like to go ahead and start Homecoming  as soon as I finish Day 21.

Stacking the Shelves & Sunday Post [9]: The First Sunday Post

Okay, this was an awesome book haul week. Like, all of my library holds came in, which is great for the blog, but bad for my sixty page senior thesis due on Wednesday. Eeek! I just have to get to Wednesday, and then I can read all the things.

School Library

My TBR jar challenge for this month is to read a series finale. So, since I read The 100  by Kass Morgan in March, I picked up Day 21  and Homecoming  from my school library, which literally has every young adult book I could ever want.

Public Library

The library has been kind to me this week. Also, when I picked up X-Men, I stopped by the graphic novel section and saw Saga, Vol. 4.  I think you know what my most recent hold is. I think you know. But I have wanted to read X-Men comics for the longest time, but there are literally so many  that I googled where to start and this was the one that it gave me. So excited for April! It's going to be a good reading month. I can feel it.

Netgalley

'89 Walls  is set in 1989. It's a contemporary (can I say that since it's set in 1989? I'm still saying it.) romance following Quinn and Seth who are both finishing high school. The cover is entrancing. How could I not?
Hailey on Booktube has already read 5 to 1  and has been raving about it. I was so happy to see it on NetGalley and even happier that I got it. The year is 2054, the ratio of males to females in India is 5:1, and women are of the highest commodity. Are you not in love? I'm in love.

Life Update

So I have been in absolute crackdown mode on my senior thesis. Currently 60 pages with a few more to tack on. Also, graduation and AP tests and finals and college and everything else are approaching like a freight train at 100 mph. However, I am almost finished with my thesis, and then all I will have left it to print off this monster and do a 20 minute presentation over it. It's all really terrifying. Hence the blog absence. Hence the reading slump.

When I have I ever done a "Top 5 Wednesday" correctly? Probably never. I decided to change this to series & trilogies that I wanted to start yesterday because technically I still have to start the first book in all of these series. It's not really cheating, right?

The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater

Song of Ice and Fire Series by George R. R. Martin

Shatter Me Trilogy by Tahereh Mafi
